I got an email from USAcarry.com today that related the following story.
Two friends are camping in the woods. They’re relaxing in their campsite when all of the sudden a giant grizzly approaches. One of the friends grabs his tennis shoes from their tent, throws them on and quickly starts tying the laces. The other friend looks at him and says “what are you doing? There’s no way you can outrun that bear!” And the one putting on his shoes says, “I don’t have to outrun the bear, I only have to outrun you.”
The point of the anecdote is obvious, but we can extend its application to our lives in a much more profound manner. The easiest way to avoid getting caught in a bad situation is to avoid that situation entirely.
Don’t go into darkly lit side-streets. Don’t walk alone after dusk (or before dawn). Never be out without a flashlight, and when it starts to get dark USE IT! Be aware of your surroundings. Keep your hands free to reach for your defensive weapons should the situation arise.
Picture yourself as a criminal scoping out potential targets. Who are you going to pick? The person who’s alert and scanning their surroundings, hands free; or the person with a phone glued to their ear, or oblivious to their surroundings as they frantically text away?
