What is a “Sitting Duck Policy”?

A “Sitting Duck Policy” is a policy made by some person, company, agency, or organization that has the effect of removing a your ability to defend yourself while on their some property.

This policy may prohibit you from carrying a firearm, mace, taser, pepper spray, knife, or any number of other self-defense weapons.

This isn’t a legal site, we’re not lawyers, we’re not offering legal advice or assistance. To be frank, laws vary by country, state, county, city — sometimes they even vary by neighborhood. You’ll have to check with laws covering your jurisdiction to be sure.

However, generally speaking, private property owners can restrict or prohibit whatever or whomever they want. Whether you’re fat or thin, black or white, Democrat or Republican, gun-toting or gun-fearing, the property owner’s rights usually trump yours. We’re not here to debate whether their property rights trump your self-preservation rights, we’re just to reporting who has a formal policy that turns you into a Sitting Duck.

So what is SittingDuckPolicy.com all about?

The goal of SittingDuckPolicy.com is to raise awareness of those that have policies (and/or notices) in place that prohibit or restrict law-abiding citizens from being able to defend themselves while on their property.

We believe that full-disclosure will help us as customers, employees, citizens, or even congregation members make fully-informed decisions about a given person/organization — a decision that could possibly save your life.

I like the idea, how can I help?

  1. Participate! We invite you to comment on the articles with your own experiences, opinions, thoughts, and suggestions!
  2. Contribute! If you know of a location with a Sitting Duck Policy, snap a picture of their policy and email it to us along with the name and address.
  3. Get active! Tell shop owners that you don’t approve of their policy and ask them to change. Use these cards to get started.
  4. Get political! If your local jurisdiction has laws in place that prevent you from carrying what you feel is an efficient self-defense weapon, contact your local legislators and open a dialog with them to have the laws changed.
